“Mother”

Watercolor on 300gsm cold press

This painting is for my mom, who died before I ever picked up a paintbrush.

Redwoods have the ability to live on after they have been felled. While their original stump is left to decay, they will send up new baby trees from their living roots. These saplings spring up around the stump and quickly take the light left by their fallen mother's absence.

A fully grown ring of redwoods around such a stump is called a cathedral.

“South County Sunrise”
10x14
Watercolor on 300gsm cold press

I was 10 the very first time I set an alarm for 4am, which sounds crazy unless you've met a 10 year old recently. I was visiting my grandparents in Santa Cruz County, Arizona, and My Opa would take me to see a sunrise if I was ready in time. The first day, I slept in. The second day I was ready by 4:30.

He had a red dirt road truck he would usually let me drive, but on the day of my first sunrise I curled up on the passenger seat as he took a new path up the mountain.

This is not that sunrise. The thing about sunrises is that they are made just for the people who are up in time to see them.

This one is dedicated to my Opa, and to anyone who would get up at 4 to take a child to see a sunrise.
